What is my birth philosophy?

Updated: May 20, 2024

When choosing a care team, its important to understand their philosophies and belief systems surrounding birth. I wanted to share with you my philosophy on birth as a birth doula and educator.....

I believe that birth is a normal, natural, and healthy process that can safely take place in a hospital, birthing centre or home.

I believe every individual should have the opportunity;

  • To be an active participant in their care, through informed choice (which includes informed consent and informed refusal);

  • Give birth as they wish in an environment they feel is nurturing and secure, ensuring their emotional well-being, privacy, and personal preferences are respected;

  • Receive support for making informed choices on what they feel is best for them and baby

Interventions:

  • Interventions carry risks to both mother and baby and should be reserved for rare circumstances in which the benefits outweigh the risks;

  • If an individual chooses a specific intervention, they should be given resources, and information including the benefits, risks, and alternatives to make an informed decision for their care
